In 1969 thirty five miles of coastline where covered in oil from a disastrous spill off shore causing severe environmental damage. As a result, the Nixon administration created the Environmental Protection Agency and passed the Clean Air Act in less than a year of this accident. Santa Barbra is the birthplace of the environmental movement and the Earth Day Festival.
